Instructional Level:

The instructional level of the program is advanced according to the definition of the APTA: The level of this program assumes that participants have thorough familiarity with the topic, so the course focuses on advanced techniques, recent advances, and future directions.

Educational Credit:

This program was approved for 32.45 contact hours, 3.2 CEUs by the California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA # 11-498)

Certification:

Completion of the advanced course and the basic or initial course will enable the attendees to take the International Certification in Lymphedema Management Examination (ICLM Examination).
Certification Level 2 is received upon successful completion of the ICLM examination.  The attendees will receive their certification at the end of the course.

Participants who pass the ICLM Examination and submit a case study will be ICLM Certified.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will demonstrate the:

  1. Understanding of the anatomical and physiological concepts underlying lymphedema management.
  2. Understanding of the psychological issues raised by cancer & lymphedema.
  3. Ability to perform manual lymph drainage (mld) and multi-layered bandaging as described by the Leduc School.
  4. Understanding of the use of compression devices.
  5. Understanding of patients education (precautions, skin care etc.)
  6. Ability to evaluate patients suffering from lymphedema or edema, and to design a a comprehensive plan of care.
  7. Ability to treat various pathologies showing symptoms of edema or lymphedema using the techniques of lymphedema management.
  8. Ability to answer most of the questions raised by patients.
  9. Ability to recognize when the intervention of the physician is necessary.
  10. Understanding of the most recent research performed in the field of treatment of lymphedema.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2013
  • 8:00-9:30 am: Review of Anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system: Topographic structure of the lymph vessels systems.  Anatomy of the lymphatic system of the limbs and trunk.  Video.  Lymph formation.  Lymph propulsion.
  • 9:30-10:30 am: Lymphedema: Definition.  Differential diagnosis.  Lymphatic system imaging.  Primary and secondary lymphedema.
  • 10:45-12:00 noon- 1:00-2:00 pm: Lab: manual lymph drainage of the lower extremity (L.E.).
  • 2:00-4:00 pm: Lab: Manual lymph drainage of the upper extremity (U.E.)
  • 4:00-5:00 pm: Recent research performed by the Leduc team.
FEBRUARY, FEBRUARY 22.
  • 8:00am-10:15 am: Treatment of the U.E. lymphedema post-mastectomy.  Manual lymph drainage, multi-layered bandaging.  Theory: drainage of the breast.
  • 10:30-12:00 noon: Treatment of the L.E. lymphedema post-prostate cancer surgery.  Manual lymph drainage.  Multi-layered bandaging.  Theory: manual lymph drainage and application of compression to the genital area.
  • 1:00-4:00 pm: Head and neck lymphedema.  Theory and practice.
  • 4:00-5:00 pm: Questions.  Case studies.
  • 5:00 – 6:00pm: Compression devices.  Presentation by specialist.
Saturday, february 23
  • 8:00-9:30 am: Lymphedema and surgery.  Breast reconstruction: implications in rehab.  Lab: Manual lymph drainage of the U.E.
  • 9:30 – 10:30 am :Cancer risk factors.  Cancer treatment: radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy.  Physical treatment of the consequences of radiotherapy.  Cancer rehabilitation.
  • 10:45-12:00 noon: Lymphedema in pediatrics.  Case studies.  Treatment.  Education of caregivers.  Supportive documentation.
  • 1:00-2:00 pm: Documentation.  Measurements.  Data analysis.  Case studies.
  • 2:00-3:30 pm: Lab: Manual lymph drainage of the L.E.
  • 3:30-5:00 pm: International Certification in Lymphedema Management Examination.
 SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24
  • 8:00am- 915 am: Concomitant Venous Obstruction in Patients with Secondary Lymphedema.  Venous edema: pathology, physical treatment.
  • 9:15-10:15 am:   Skin care.  Wound treatment.
  • 10:30 – 12:00 noon: Lymphedema and liposuction surgery: pre and post operative rehab care.
  • 1:00 – 1:45 pm: Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type 1.
  • 1:45 – 4:00 pm: Review of practice.  Lab: multi-layered bandaging of the U.E. and L.E.  Prevention of lymphedema.  Q & A. 

Note:  For lab practice, participants should bring appropriate clothing, such as shorts, tank top or bathing suit.
