Instructional Level:
The instructional level of the program is Intermediate according to the definition of APTA. The level of this program assumes that participants have general familiarity with the topic, so the course focuses on increasing understanding and application. Applicants will acquire general familiarity with the topic by reading the pre-course material sent upon confirmation of registration.
Certification:
Certification level I is received upon successful completion of the post-course tests. After completing the initial and the advanced course, the participants will take the International Certification in Lymphedema Management Examination (ICLM Examination). Participants who pass the ICLM Examination and submit a case study will become ICLM Certified.
Educational Credit:
This program was approved for 51 contact hours, 5.1 CEUs by the California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA # 14-242)
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, participants will demonstrate the:
- Understanding of the anatomical and physiological concepts underlying lymphedema management.
- Understanding of the psychological issues raised by cancer and lymphedema.
- Ability to perform manual lymph drainage (mld) and multi-component bandaging as described by the Leduc School.
- Understanding of the use of compression devices.
- Understanding of patients education (precautions, skin care, compression garment management, home program, lifestyle).
- Ability to evaluate patients suffering from edema or lymphedema and to design and document comprehensive treatments.
- Ability to differentiate Chronic Venous Insufficiency and post-phlebitic syndrome from Lymphedema and Lipedema.
- Ability to treat patients suffering from lymphedema , venous edema, and lipidema and eventually recognize the signs of deep venous thrombo.
- Ability to answer most of the questions raised by patients.
- Ability to recognize when the intervention of the physician is necessary.

- 10:45-12:00 noon-1:00-3:00pm: Lab: manual lymph drainage applied to the lower extremity (L.E.)
- 3:15-5:00pm: Lab: Manual lymph drainage applied to the upper extremity. (U.E.).
- 5:00-6:00pm: Compression devices: presentation by specialist. Lab.
THURSDAY, APRIL 23
- 8:00-10:30am. Test 2: Theoretical approach to physical treatment of lymphedema. Research. Review test 1. Q & A.
- Evaluation and treatment of the L.E. lymphedema.: inspection, measurements, palpation, precautions, skin care and diet (Research), manual lymph drainage lab. Exercises addressing the functional impairment generated by L.E. lymphedema. Documentation. Medicare requirements. Coding. Data analysis. Measurement for stockings. Lab: stocking fitting.

- 1:00-3:00 pm: Treatment of lipidema and Dercum’s disease. Lab.

Note: For lab practice, participants should bring appropriate clothing, such as shorts, tank top or bathing suit.
