Instructional Level:
The instructional level of the program is Intermediate according to the definition of APTA. The level of this program assumes that participants have general familiarity with the topic, so the course focuses on increasing understanding and application. Applicants will acquire general familiarity with the topic by reading the pre-course material sent upon confirmation of registration.
Certification:

Certification level 1 is received upon successful completion of the post-course tests. After completing the initial and the advanced course, the participants will take the International Certification in Lymphedema Management Examination (ICLM Examination). Participants who pass the ICLM Examination and submit a case study will become ICLM Certified.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, participants will demonstrate the:
- Understanding of the anatomical and physiological concepts underlying lymphedema management.
- Understanding of the psychological issues raised by cancer and lymphedema.
- Ability to perform manual lymph drainage (mld) and multi-component bandaging as described by the Leduc School.
- Understanding of the use of compression devices. (indications and contraindications)
- Understanding of patients education (precautions, skin care, compression garment management, home program, lifestyle).
- Ability to evaluate patients suffering from lymphedema or venous edema and to design and document comprehensive plans of care.
- Ability to differentiate Chronic Venous Insufficiency and Post-Phlebitic Syndrome from Lymphedema and Lipedema.
- Ability to treat patients suffering from lymphedema, venous edema and lipidema and to recognize signs of Deep Venous Thrombosis.
- Ability to answer most of the questions raised by patients.
- Ability to recognize when the intervention of the physician is necessary.

- 9:45-12:00 noon-1:00-2:00pm: Lab: manual lymph drainage applied to the lower extremity (L.E.)
- 2:15-4:30pm: Lab: Manual lymph drainage applied to the upper extremity. (U.E.)
Tuesday, October 27
- 7:00-9:30am. Test 2: Theoretical approach to physical treatment of lymphedema. Research. Review test 1. Q & A.
- Lab: Evaluation and treatment of the L.E. lymphedema.: inspection, measurements, palpation, precautions, skin care and diet (Research), manual lymph drainage lab. Exercises addressing the functional impairment generated by L.E. lymphedema. Documentation. Medicare requirements. Coding. Data analysis. Measurement for stockings. Stocking fitting.
- 9:45-11:00 noon: Lab: manual lymph drainage. Practice on L.E.
- 11:00-12:00pm: Lab: Multi-component bandaging. Practice on L.E.
- 1:00- 2:00pm: Pathophysiology.
- 2:15 – 4:30pm: Treatment of U.E. lymphedema. Management of post-mastectomy lymphedema: assessment, precautions, skin care, lab.: manual lymph drainage . Exercises addressing the functional impairment generated by U.E. lymphedema. Measurement for sleeves. Sleeve fitting.

- 7:00- 9:30am: Test 3: Physical treatment of lymphedema (continued). Review of test 2. Q & A. Lab: manual lymph drainage applied to L.E.
- 9:45- 11:00 noon: Case study: Lab: manual lymph drainage and multi-component bandaging applied to the L.E.
- 11:00-12:00pm – 1:00- 2:0opm: Case study: Lab: manual lymph drainage and multi-component bandaging of the U.E. and trunk. Exercises
- 2:15-3:00: Review: L.E. & U.E. manual lymph drainage. Protocol. Questions. Problem solving.
- 3:00-4:30pm: Pathophysiology.
Thursday, October 29
- 7:00-9:30am:. Review of test 3. Q & A. Venous edema: Pathophysiology and physical treatment. Lab: Manual techniques. Exercises. Precautions. Life style. Compression garments addressing the needs of venous insufficiency. Case study.
- 9:45-12:00 noon-1:00-2:00pm: Review: Lab: U.E. manual lymph drainage and multi-component bandaging.
- Review: Protocol of treatment.
- 2:15-4:30pm Case study L.E. manual lymph drainage and multi-component bandaging.
Friday, October 30
- 7:00 – 8:00am: Theory: treatment of genital lymphedema nad breast lymphedema.
- 8:00-9:15 am – Lymphedema Management applied to pediatrics. Case studies.
- 9:30 – 11:00am: Lymphedema of head and neck. Theory and practice.
- Lab: treatment : manual lymph drainage and multi-component bandaging of the U.E.
- 11:00 – 12:noon:Pathophysiology. Case studies.
- 1:00- 2:00pm: Treatment of lipidema and Dercum’s disease. Lab.
- 2:00-4:00pm: Complex cases. Q & A.
Note: For lab practice, participants should bring appropriate clothing, such as shorts, tank top or bathing suit.
