Instructional Level:

The instructional level of the program is advanced. According to the definition of the APTA: This level assumes thorough familiarity with the topic and focuses on

advanced techniques, recent advances, and future directions.

Educational Credit:

This program was approved for 33 contact hours, 3.3 CEUs by the California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA # 15-281 .  To be renewed soon)

Certification:

Certification is received upon successful completion of post-course test.

Completion of the advanced course and the basic course will enable the attendees to take the International Certification in Lymphedema Management Examination.(ICLM Examination). Participants who pass the ICLM Examination and submit a case study will be ICLM Certified.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will demonstrate the:

1. Understanding of the anatomical and physiological concepts underlying lymphedema management.
2. Understanding of the psychological issues raised by cancer & lymphedema.
3. Ability to perform manual lymph drainage (mld) and multi-component bandaging adressing lymphedema of the limbs, head, neck and trunk as described by the Leduc School.
4. Understanding of the use of compression devices. (Indications and contra-indications.)
5. Understanding of patients education (self-care, compression garments management, precautions, H.E.P..)
6. Ability to evaluate patients suffering from lymphedema, edema, and lipidema and to design a a comprehensive plan of care.
7. Ability to treat various pathologies showing symptoms of edema or lymphedema using the techniques of lymphedema management.
8. Ability to answer most of the questions raised by patients.
9. Ability to recognize when the intervention of the physician is necessary.(for instance if there is suspiscion of D.V.T.)
10. Understanding of the most recent research performed in the field of treatment of lymphedema.

• 8:00-11:00 am: Review of anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system.  Topographic structure of the lymph vessels system.  Anatomy of the lymphatic system of the limbs and trunk. Video.                           Lymph formation.  Lymph propulsion.  Q&A.
• 11:00- 12:00 noon – 1:00-3:00 pm: Lymphedema: Definition .  Differential diagnosis.  Lymphatic system imaging.  Primary and secondary lymphedema.  Lab: manual lymph drainage of the lower extremity.
• 3:15-5:00 pm: Recent research results.  Ongoing research performed by the Leduc team at the University of Brussels – Belgium.  Lab: Manual lymph drainage of the upper extremity.
• 5:00-6:30 pm: Lab:  multi-component bandaging of the lower extremity.                                                                                                     Lymphedema and surgery.

• 8:00am-10:15 am:  Lab: Treatment of the upper extremity lymphedema post-mastectomy. Lab: Manual lymph drainage, multi-component bandaging.  Theory: Drainage of lymphedema of the breast.
• 10:30-12:00 noon – Treatment of the lower extremity lymphedema post prostate cancer surgery.  Lab:Manual lymph drainage , multi-component bandaging.  Theory: manual lymph drainage and application of compression to the genital area.

• 9:30 – 10:30 noon: Cancer risk factors.  Cancer treatment: radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy.  Physical treatment of the consequences of radiotherapy.  Cancer rehabilitation.
• 10:45 – 12:00 noon:  Lymphedema in pediatrics.  Cases studies.  Treatment.  Education of care-givers.  Supportive documentation.      Lab: Manual lymph drainage of the lower extremity
• 1:00 – 2:00 pm: Documentation.  Lab:  Measurements.  Data analysis.  Case studies.  Q & A.
• 2:00 – 3:45 pm: Lab: multi-component bandaging of the upper and lower extremity.

• 8:00- 9:30 am: Concomitant Venous Obstruction in Patients with Secondary Lymphedema.  Review of the symptoms of DVT.  Venous edema: pathology, physical treatment.  Lab.
• 9:30 – 10:15 am:   Skin care.  Wound treatment.
• 10:30 – 12:00 noon: Lymphedema and liposuction surgery: pre and post-operative rehab. care.
• 1:00 – 2:00 pm:  Prevention of lymphedema.
• 2:00 – 3:30: Lab: Multi-component bandaging of the L.E. and upper extremity.
• 3:30 – 5:00 pm:  Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type 1.  Review of Dercum’s disease and lipidema.   Q & A.

Note:  For lab practice, participants should bring appropriate clothing, such as shorts, tank top or bathing suit.
