Instructional Level:

The instructional level of this program is intermediate according to APTA definition.

The instructional level of this program assumes that participants have general familiarity with the topic, so the course focuses on increasing understanding and application.  Applicants  acquire general familiarity with the topic by reading the course material sent upon confirmation of registration.

Educational Credit

This program has been approved for 51 contact hours, 5.1 CEUs by the California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA#18-342)

 Certification:

Upon successful completion of post-course tests attendees will receive the certification level 1.

Completion of this course and the Advanced course will enable the attendees to take the International Certification in Lymphedema Management Examination and to become ICLM certified.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, participants will demonstrate the:

  1. Understanding of the anatomical and physiological concepts underlying lymphedema management.
  2. Understanding of the psychological issues raised by cancer &lymphedema.
  3. Ability to perform manual lymph drainage (mld) and multi-component bandaging Leduc method.
  4. Understanding of the use of compression devices (indications & contraindications.)
  5. Understanding of patient education (precautions, skin care, compression garment management, home program, lifestyle).
  6. Ability to evaluate patients suffering from lymphedema and venous edema and to design and document comprehensive plans of care.
  7. Ability to differentiate Chronic Venous Insufficiency and Post-phlebitic Syndrome from Lymphedema and Lipedema.
  8. Ability to treat patients suffering from lymphedema, venous edema & lipedema and eventually to recognize signs of deep venous thrombosis.
  9. Ability to answer most of the questions raised by patients.
  10. Ability to recognize when the intervention of the physician is necessary.

Research.10:45-12:00noon – 1:00-3:00pm: Lab:  manual lymph drainage of  the lower extremity (L.E.).3:15-5:00pm: Lab: manual lymph drainage of the upper extremity (U.E.)

Data analysis.  Measurements for stockings.Lab: Stocking fitting.10:45-12:00noon: Lab: manual lymph drainage; practice on L.E.1:00-3:00pm:Lab:L.E. manual lymph drainage and  multi-component bandaging.

    3:15-5:30 pm: Treatment of U.E. lymphedema. Management of post-mastectomy lymphedema:  assessment, precautions, skin care,

    Lab:  manual lymph drainage .  Exercises addressing the functional impairment generated by U.E. lymphedema.  Measurement  techniques for sleeves. Sleeve fitting.

9:00-10:15am: Lymphedema management applied to pediatrics. Case studies.

10:30-12:00noon: Lymphedema of head and neck.  Lab: Treatment: manual lymph drainage, multi-component bandaging of the U.E.

1:00-3:00pm: Treatment of lipidema and Dercum’s disease.  Lab.

3:00-4:00pm: Complex cases.  Q&A.

 

Note: For lab practice, participants should bring appropriate clothing such as shorts ,sport bra or tank top or bathing suits.
